The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Abduction

On a fall night in 1961, Betty and Barney Hill claimed they were abducted by a UFO later assumed to hail from a planet orbiting the star Zeta Reticuli. Their experience has been the blueprint for UFO encounters ever since, repeated by abductees around the world. In the fifty years that have followed, researchers, psychologists and scientists have struggled to explain exactly what happened that night, and to understand what happened afterward. Perhaps the most famous case of UFO abduction on record, books, movies and television shows have based their plots on the Hill’s experience. Many researchers were skeptical, citing an array of holes in the story, but to Betty and Barney Hill the experience was very real, and would haunt them for the rest of their lives.

The UFO Encounter

On September 19th, 1961, the Hill’s were driving from Niagara Falls to their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They spotted a strange object in the nearby sky, which appeared to follow them. They stopped several times to observe the object, and became terrified when Barney witnessed the occupants of the craft through his binoculars: weird little humanoid guys. The Hill’s began to believe they may be in danger of abduction, and they fled.

When they finally arrived home their four-hour journey had taken seven hours, and their memories of the final leg of the journey after the encounter with the UFO were fragmented and hazy. Both Barney and Betty were confused, paranoid and fearful, though they could not pinpoint exactly why.

They reported the UFO sighting to Major Paul Henderson at the Pease Air Force Base. Apparently two radar anomalies had been noted during that same period, but in his report Henderson nevertheless stated the Hills had been confused by the planet Jupiter.

Betty’s nightmares started soon after, and continued for several nights. During these strange dreams she claimed to recall more events of the evening, including entering the craft and the appearance of the inhabitants within. Though Barney was still skeptical, it became clear to Betty that they must have been abducted by aliens.

In 1964 the Hills underwent hypnosis sessions under the care of Dr. Benjamin Simon to help reveal more about their encounter. Separately, they described nearly identical experiences, including the little gray men who worked on them. They outlined examinations the little men conducted, and their ability to communicate telepathically. Betty recalled a “Star Map” she had been shown by the creatures, and she was able to make a sketch of it.

The Hills wished to keep their experience quiet, but news eventually leaked out. Betty and Barney Hill went down in history as either the luckiest or craziest people in the world, depending on your perspective. Barney passed away in 1969, and Betty in 2004.

The Legacy of Betty and Barney Hill

Many of the particulars we associate with a stereotypical UFO abduction started with the Hill case. The aliens we refer to as the “grays”, with their oversized heads and big, buggy eyes, were described by both Betty and Barney under hypnosis. The physical examination details, including the dreaded probing, were first mentioned here as well. Missing time, the shape of the craft, the nightmares—all products of the Hill UFO abduction case. This begs an interesting question: Did the Hill case mark the beginning of an ongoing study conducted on humans by aliens from another world, or was the public so captivated by their story that people began to imagine their own versions of the Hill abduction?

The so-called Star Map is another interesting piece of the puzzle. A school teacher named Marjorie Fish examined the Star Map in 1968, and conducted extensive research on the drawing using a respected astronomy reference guide. She concluded, after two years of study, that the planet the UFO had come from must be orbiting the star Zeta Reticuli. Several people have logically refuted this possibility over the years, including the esteemed astrophysicist Carl Sagan. However, among believers the Star Map is ample evidence of the UFO’s origin.

Though Barney passed away only a few years later, Betty went on to discuss her experiences, speak at UFO conventions and even write a book. Her statements became more bizarre through the years as she claimed more UFO sightings, damaging her credibility. Some believe Betty was a confused woman who dragged Barney along for the ride. Others say her original experience was legitimate, and resulted in psychological damage which caused her bizarre behavior later in life.

UFO Skeptics and Believers

Naturally, the tale of the Hill abduction has come under tremendous scrutiny over the years. For many, the value of hypnosis in itself is up for debate as a reliable means of memory recovery. Plus, the Hills had several years to discuss the occurrences of that night before they underwent the hypnosis sessions. During that time, Betty was fixated on the recurring dreams she had following the event. Blurred and fragmented memories, along with suggestions brought on by conversations, may disqualify anything the Hills “recalled” under hypnosis.

One researcher retraced the Hill’s journey from Canada to their home in New Hampshire, and came up with an interesting conclusion: The Hill’s may have misidentified an aircraft beacon. The Hill’s were driving in the middle of the night, and possibly sleep deprived. The beacon must have appeared quite surprising on the horizon, particularly to exhausted people who were not expecting it.

The Hills themselves stated that they frequently pulled over to allow their dog to do his thing on the side of the road. Could the Hills have fallen asleep in the car on the side of the road, which would account for the missing time? They returned home in a groggy state, with poor memories of a perfectly mundane night.

Other details fall under suspicion when looking at the big picture. Betty Hill’s sister experienced her own UFO encounter several years earlier, and Betty was reportedly quite captivated by the story. The popular television show Outer Limits featured an episode with alien beings strikingly similar to the “grays” described by Barney, and aired only days before Barney’s hypnotic regression. These facts point to the Hill’s outright fabrication of the story, which seems plausible given Betty’s odd behavior in the years that followed.

But the Hills did have a few things going for them. They were people with good careers: Barney was a federal employee working with the Postal Service, and Betty was a social worker. They were an interracial couple, active with the NAACP and well liked in the community. As a professional, politically active couple fighting for respect, it really doesn’t make sense that they would purposely tarnish their reputations by fabricating this bizarre story. Still, that’s not much to hang a hat on. It’s impossible to speculate what may have been going on in the minds of the Hill’s way back then.

Do You Believe Betty and Barney Hill?

It’s strange looking back at the Hill story from this vantage point. Fifty years have passed, and the details match exactly what many people have since reported as their UFO abduction experience. Viewed in that light, it’s tempting to call these coincidences evidence. But it’s important to remember that the Hill abduction was the first of such cases, and the story became very popular with the public over the years that followed. Considered alone and by its own merits, the story appears unlikely.

But just because something seems unlikely doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. In the end, it comes down to three possible scenarios: The Hill’s were confused by a string of strange circumstance, and built a story to explain that confusion over the years that followed; the Hills made the whole thing up for reasons known only to them; or Betty and Barney Hill were abducted by a UFO from a planet orbiting Zeta Reticuli.

I actually wrote to Dr Simon in Boston who forwarded my letter on to Betty and Barney. I did this when I was a teenager, somewhere around 1968 or so. I still have the letters somewhere. The first letter was from both of them and a second letter from Betty after Barney and the dog had died. The second letter would have been about 1972 or so. If I come across them, I let you know.

@moonfish: That is very, very interesting. If you do happen to find them I'd be interested in hearing more!

I am sure I still have the letters - somewhere in the basement along with a thousand other things. I will try to look for them soon. I can either try to take a photo of them and send them to you in e-mail or I can photocopy them to you and sent them normal mail. Give me a few days.

OK so far I have found a letter from Dr Simon but not the 2 from the Hills yet. Send me your e-mail and I will send you a photo of the letter from Simon.
